Custer County is located in southeastern Montana. Custer County has a population of about 12,000 residents. The county seat is Miles City, which is famous for the World Famous Buckinghorse sale held annually.

Agriculture is the county's number one industry. We also have the Miles City Community College. Custer County 4-H enrolls about 160 members ages 6-19, consisting of 9 4-H Clubs with over 40 volunteer adults. Custer County has one full time Family and Consumer Sciences/4-H Agent, and one full time Agricultural/4-H Agent. Support staff consists of one full time secretary.

Opportunities in Custer County

Montana Community Foundation has a new grant program for nonprofits in Rosebud, Custer, and Fallon Counties. Grants are up to $50,000 for a wide variety of projects that improve the quality of life in communities in this area (essentially, anything but operating expenses). Applications are due by November 1, 2023 for the next round of funding. There is additional information in the attached materials and on MTCF’s website.

A statewide leadership class offered in Custer County in Partnership of MCAEDC 

“The resource that holds the greatest value and future potential for any community is its people.” 

Leadership Miles City has been active since its inception in 2005 by identifying, recruiting, anddeveloping emerging community and business leaders. Modeled after other leadership programs operating successfully in communities in Montana and across the U.S., Leadership 14 allows individuals to learn more about community and regional business and industry resources one day a month for a nine-month period while growing in leadership.
